If you are new to building our robots, don’t worry — we will walk you through the whole setup process.
The first step is to make sure you have the correct software on your sd card (the little card that you inserted in the Raspberry Pi). The Raspberry Pi was designed and built by a UK Foundation, and they have developed their own software for it called “Raspbian”. However, Dexter Industries has modified that software for the GoPiGo, and our version is called “Raspbian for Robots”.
There are a few options as to how you choose to put this software on your sd card.
Option 1: An SD Card from Dexter Industries
If you purchased a Dexter Industries SD card for your GoPiGo, you can skip this step: your SD card is already configured!
The Dexter Industries SD card already has the software, but you can make more space available on it by “expanding the image”. This is just a simple configuration step that you can take once you connect to the Raspberry Pi.
Once you connect to the Raspberry Pi (through a VNC or through terminal) you can expand your Dexter Industries SD Card by running the command:
After expanding the SD card, you will have access to all the available space on the SD Card.
Option 2: Download and install the Dexter Industries “Raspbian for Robots” image
If you want to download and use our modified “wheezy” image on your own dedicated SD card we have step by step instructions on installing the Raspbian for Robots Image to an SD Card here for both Mac and PC.
Note that once you do this, and then connect to your Raspberry Pi, you can expand to the full size of your SD Card by running the command in terminal:
This allows you to use all available space on the SD Card.
If you are more advanced and you want to update your configuration and hardware profiles, connect to the internet and run the following commands:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Option 3: Modify your own image
If you want to use your own wheezy installation, you must make the following changes yourself to the Raspberry Pi.
You can download and run our install script. This will automatically download and install all the packages and dependencies required for GoPiGo to your existing Raspbian image.
1). Open the Terminal on your Raspberry Pi and clone the Dexter Industries GoPiGo Repository.
git clone https://github.com/DexterInd/GoPiGo.git
2). A folder named GoPiGo should appear in you current working directory.
3). Open it and go to Setup Files directory:
4). The install script is called install.sh . Make it executable
sudo chmod +x install.sh
5). Run the script
6). Follow the onscreen instructions and the script will install all the dependencies and will Restart upon completion. Your Raspbian should now be ready to run GoPiGo.
