Power brickpi with wall adapter

Hi, I am looking for confirmation on the ability to power the brickpi and the connected raspberry pi2 with a 9v power supply wall plug such as this https://www.sparkfun.com/products/298?_ga=1.87696785.82234380.1456661183 by plugging it into the barrel Jack on the brickpi.

This would be for a stationary robot or for just using the pi to program and other general pi use. Will this be enough power for the brickpi, rpi2 and Lego motors and sensors?

Thanks

Probably not. To power the BrickPi and some motors, you’ll need at least a 2A power supply at 9-12V. So this looks a little light.

If you just want to program the BrickPi though, why not use the USB power?

Or see our complete guide on powering the BrickPi+ Here.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

My goal was to avoid using a battery pack as my unit would be a robot arm or similar type project with the unit attached to my tv via hdmi. I wanted to use a wall plug that could power the units motors, brickpi, and rpi2 but also use the same power supply when just working on the rpi itself.

Thanks again

How many motors do you expect to run?

How about this? 12 Volt Power Supply - 9 Amp Standard (12V 9A DC) Adapter

Thanks again. I still have much to learn about power and of course do not want to fry anything. The above adapter will be ok, I am assuming it will not push through to much power when I am not using the motors?

Currently, with my other rpi2 I have a 5v 2amp and a 2.5amp adapters i use…if i use those plugged into the pi with the brickpi attached running no motors…Can i just use the pi as normal?

Just FYI…These questions are all based on trying to learn how to properly power different units and motors etc. I ran across this https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/getting-started-with-the-brickpi#powering-the-brickpi...in which they are suggesting running a motor and sensor off the power supply I linked in my above post.

Thank you again…I really appreciate the help!

Good to read this post: http://www.dexterindustries.com/topic/wall-power-battery-pack-at-the-same-time/

Sparkfun did not contact us about that before writing the tutorial. It’s great, but if you try to run too many motors off that power supply, you MAY end up damaging something. But heck man, it’s worth a try. Worst case scenario, you replace some hardware and try it again, right?
